Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development, Addis Ababa
The third session of the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD 3) convened for its final day in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 19 May 2017. Delegates gathered in the morning to take part in parallel sessions on the six sub-themes of the Forum: eradicating all forms of poverty in Africa; ending hunger and achieving food security in Africa; ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all; promoting gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls; building resilient infrastructure and promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and innovation; and, conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.

International Conference of the African Society for Ageing Research and Development (ASARD)
The stakeholders’ meeting, tagged “Inauguration Ceremony and International Conference of the African Society for Ageing Research and Development (ASARD)’’, was organised by the National Universities Commission (NUC), in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO).
In her remarks, Dr Emem Omokaro, LEADS Scholar, Ageing Studies Development, NUC, said that ASARD was an African think-tank platform for experts to exchange information on care for older persons. She said that the expected outcomes of the conference would identify research priorities, institute joint research projects across universities and share knowledge to policy makers, among others.

HOUSE CONSOLIDATES $ BILLS ON WELFARE FOR OLDER PERSONS
At the Multi-Sectoral Stakeholders’ Forum on Ageing organised by the House Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, in collaboration with Dave Omokaro Foundation, the speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, said the National Assembly has consolidated four private members’ bills to address the welfare of older persons.

NGO tasks FG on family support system for elderly persons
The Executive Director, Dave Omokaro Foundation, an NGO, Dr Emem Omokaro, on Tuesday stressed the need to build family support systems to cater for the elderly as their population was increasing. Omokaro told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that strengthening the family support system in terms of health, savings, income security as well as a sustainable insurance, will help manage some of the older citizen’s plight.

Nigeria’s ageing population to hit 30m in 2050
The population of Nigerians above the age of 60 years is expected to hit 30 million by the year 20150, with a global figure projected at 2 billion for the same year. The Dave Omokaro Foundation (DOF) which stated this in Abuja on Monday lamented the absence of clear cut health and welfare policies for the nation’s aged population.

10 varsities to offer Gerontology, Geriatrics studies
The Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, at a two-day consultative meeting with selected varsities on the delivery of post-graduate programmes in Gerontology and Geriatrics in Abuja said the Commission has approved 10 varsities for the pilot phase. The event, in collaboration with the Dave Omokaro Foundation, is aimed at capacity development for the training of ‘professionals and para-professionals to meet the challenges and embrace opportunities that come with the steady rise in absolute numbers of older persons.
