DOF IMPACT

The Dave Omokaro Foundation addresses needs in 3 strategic initiatives: Education (mainstreaming of ageing education), Capacity BuildingAdvocacy (influencing policy and legislation), Community Programs (healthy ageing and income security)

Our education, research, and community engagements are aligned with the United Nations’ resolutions and pledges on population, and inclusive and sustainable development including: 

  1. The Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing

  2. The W.H.O Global Strategy on Ageing and Health

  3. The African Regional Plan of Action on Ageing and older persons

  4. Nigeria’s Social Development policies and sector initiatives.

PIONEERED GERONTOLOGY EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

The Dave Omokaro Foundation pioneered gerontology and geriatric education in Nigeria. 

  • DOF facilitated the development of Post Graduate Benchmark Statement and Minimum Academic Standards (PGBMAS) in Post Graduate Diploma, Masters and Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Gerontology in eleven (11) selected Nigerian universities. 

 

  • DOF collaborated with the University of North Texas (UNT) Denton USA, to train twenty-four academic staff from eleven Nigerian Universities in the Specialist in Ageing program, with visiting scholar placements at UNT.

 

  • DOF initiated the first ever Stakeholders’ Consultative meeting in Nigeria for the development of a Geriatrics Masters Program  (2015).  This led to the breakthrough in Nigeria for an academic program in Geriatrics, besides the sub-specialization programs for Residents. 

BUILDING CAPACITY FOR AGEING 

The Dave Omokaro Foundation initiates National and International conferences, and forges innovative partnerships that draw upon a broad range of expertise to build capacity for Ageing in Nigeria.

  • Recognition and Appointment of Dave Omokaro Foundation by the International Institute on Ageing INIA UN-Malta as Collaborating Host Organization in Nigeria and one of INIA’s Global Training Partners on Ageing  

 

  • Memorandum of understanding with International Institute on Ageing (INIA) UN-Malta for In-situ Training in Ageing Policy, Policy Implementation Monitoring, and Evaluation and other related courses in Nigeria (2015)

 

  • Secured annual training of personnel from Nigeria at UN-Malta with INIA Scholarship Award for one qualified Nigerian for INIA’s Training Programs endorsed by DOF

 

ADVOCACY & POLICY INITIATIVES

DOF strongly advocates for the adoption and implementation of policies to address the opportunities and challenges of ageing and to support equity for older people in development and humanitarian planning programs.

  • DOF  inaugurated the National Summit on Ageing in Nigeria (2014)

  • DOF advocates to Sponsor the Bill for an Act to Establish the National Social Security Agency for the Elderly in Nigeria (2013-present)

 

  • Initiator and Advocate for a Policy on Ageing in collaboration with National Human Rights Commission, Nigeria. (2012- present)

  • DOF partners with the National Population Commission to mainstream Ageing into National Population Policy; National Policy on Population currently under Review (2015)

 

  • DOF collaborates with the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) and World Health Organization (WHO) to evolve a National Geriatric Health Strategy: appointed Technical Partner on Stakeholder’s Consultative Meeting on Healthy Ageing and Geriatric Care in Nigeria (2014)

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

The Dave Omokaro Foundation supports the active engagement of elders as productive members of society and  is passionate about changing attitudes and behaviors of the society towards older people..

 

  • DOF has developed models for Senior Citizens Community Centers to enhance the quality of life and wellbeing of the elderly in Nigeria by providing a platform for promoting successful ageing through  family counseling, medical and social-care services provision, access to livelihood opportunities, recreation, entertainment and a wide variety of caring mechanisms.

  • DOF commissioned Talking Eyes Media and Ed Kashi to develop a documentary on Ageing in Nigeria, targeted at advancing public information, education and dialogue on the challenges of the elderly.
